Switch to the Oil Cleansing Method for Healthier Skin

Oil cleansing is an amazing natural way to cleanse the skin that has been used for thousands of years and has recently regained popularity. Soaps are drying to the delicate facial skin, which is thinner than the skin on the rest of your body. Facial skin has a delicate microbiome and must stay at a specific PH to be healthy and supple. Between 4.8 and 6 is the sweet spot for clear healthy skin.
Natural oils purify and nourish your skin, penetrating deep into pores to dissolve makeup, dirt and impurities while leaving your protective moisture barrier intact.
The chemical that creates the foaming effect in traditional facial cleansers is sodium laurth sulfate (SLS). This is a harsh chemical detergent that corrodes in order to clean. This chemical is found in so many of the beauty products that we use every day. The rich lather feels soft and luxurious, but it removes more than makeup, dirt, and oil.

You may notice a tight, shiny feeling after you wash your face, followed by your natural oils returning. When we strip the skin of its natural oils with harsh chemicals it overproduces sebum to return itself to balance. When the facial skin is rapidly producing oil through the pores, some of them inevitably become clogged.
Cleansing your facial skin with oil may seem counterproductive if you have oily skin or acne. It’s reasonable to assume that if your skin is oily that you shouldn’t add more oil. However, the most misunderstood reason behind oily skin is that the underlying cause is dryness. Like dissolves like, therefore natural oils dissolve dirt and grime while moisturizing and healing your skin.
Natural plant oils break down dirt and impurities with the same efficacy as soaps. As you gently massage the oil into your skin, the impurities emulsify and are easily wiped away with a warm damp cloth. Your skin is left feeling moisturized and clean. While you sleep your skin experiences a recovery period, this is the perfect time to allow the nutrients of the plant oils to absorb and heal.
There are specific natural oils that can be used to cleanse delicate facial skin. Every oil isn’t right for the oil cleansing method. The oils used to cleanse the skin are non-comedogenic, meaning that they will not clog pores. Even if the oil is non-comedogenic care must still be taken to choose the right oils for your skin type.

The base oil is what will make up the bulk of your oil cleansing mixture. In fact, if you have normal to oily skin, a base oil may be all that is needed to produce glowing, hydrated, clear skin.
Nourishing oils are added in the case of dry skin. These oils add extra moisture that penetrates deeper to retain moisture and produce a hydrating effect.
Astringent oils should be added for very oily or acne-prone skin. They should always be added to the base oil in small amounts, and not be used alone. Using astringent oils for cleansing without a base oil may cause inflammation and breakouts. A little bit goes a long way, and when mixed properly they are able to correct the overproduction of oil, acne, and inflammation.
